Common Health Conditions for Those Who Are Overweight or Obese

Posted on April 7, 2020

MyObesityTeam conducted a survey in late 2019 with 159 individuals in the United States who were diagnosed by a doctor as being obese or overweight. MyObesityTeam asked respondents about:

  • The physical, social, and emotional impact that weight has on their lives.
  • The health implications of being obese or overweight.
  • Ways they have tried to lose weight.

MyObesityTeam shares the research results of our member surveys so our community can learn, collectively, from each others’ experiences.

In the United States, roughly 40 percent of the population is obese, with over 93 million people affected. When health conditions exist along with another health condition - in this case, obesity - they are known as comorbidities or comorbid conditions. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), common comorbidities among people who are obese include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke.

MyObesityTeam survey results show that the top comorbidities respondents experienced were hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep disorders, and osteoarthritis. On average, respondents report experiencing three health conditions in addition to obesity.
